Pearlescent Dance was commissioned on June 1st, 2024, and took two months to complete. The commission was completely open-ended, and thus its subject matter arose from various inspirations. As discussed in the July Newsletter, Elli has been returning to more whimsical subject matter to offset the intense study of AP art and incorporate some childhood inspirations.
Following the desire for whimsical subject matter, Elli travelled to North Captiva Island in early July and was inspired by the sea life, especially the coastal birds. Elli completed several studies of the environment and began work on the painting as soon as she returned home.
The basic intention of the piece was to display a beautiful and formal dance in the most ridiculous of scenarios: an underwater dance between fish and birds. The final product took inspiration from classical paintings as well as coastal elements.
